Why is influence important as a leader?

If you don’t know how to influence others as a leader beyond just your title, it’s going to be difficult to make any impact on your employees. Influence isn’t fear. You want to get the buy-in and people on your side.

What gets in the way of your influence?

Simply put, making it all about you gets in the way of your influence on others. The leaders with the most influence truly serve their employees, company, and customers.

How do you build your influence?

Gain self-awareness of what people think of you.

  • Gather data! Using Leading with Heart’s 360 assessment, you can find out what people really think about you. How much influence do you currently have? If you want to influence how they see you, it starts with knowing how they view you.

Maintain strong relationships across all levels.

  • Help solve other peoples’ problems. Have conversations with your staff about how they can also build their own influence. Ask them what legacy they want to leave behind in the company.

Deliver value.

  • Make sure you are delivering value for the organization. Serve the organization early on. Support others in the organization.

Be overprepared.

  • Make yourself seem knowledgeable and prepared. Dress the part! Prepare extra for meetings. Set goals, verbalize them, and take actionable steps to accomplish those goals.
